Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2011!

Dear All,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2011!
First of all we wanted to wish you and your families a beautiful Christmas, full of love, and all the best for the upcoming New Year 2011!!!
A year has passed, an amazing year for us actually, full of beautiful memories with you in Champery of course, but also in Davos, Geneva, Malmo, Marocco, Tanzania, Paris, Barcelona, Marbella, Cap Ferret, Zurich, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Chile!
We are looking forward to seing you all in 2011!!!

Ushuaia a.k.a "the end of the world"

After the Perito Moreno and El Calafate, we flew to Ushuaia, the southernmost city IN THE WORLD! As you can imagine, we are kind of missing Cartagena's tropical climate, as the average temperature in the summer here is 9ºC. Claire is very happy she actually bought this super warm red jacket in Bogota now!
Here we visited the prison built by the Argentine government to increase the Argentine population here and to ensure Argentine sovereignty over Tierra del Fuego (over Chile). The prison population kind of became forced colonists and spent most of their time building the town with timber from the forest around the prison. They also built a railway, which is known as the Tren del Fin del Mundo, of course the southernmost railway in the world! ... and a very touristy thing to do ;-) which we of course did!
We also took a boat to sail on the Beagle Channel which is a huge Channel where Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. It is really huge: 240 km long and about 5 kilometres wide at its narrowest point - From the boat we we able to see an island with sea lions and and another one with penguins! It was really awesome, especially since the boat was almost empty.
In a few hours we will be flying to Buenos Aires for Christmas and we will also be there for Alex's 30th B-DAY on the 26th... lots of exciting moments coming up :-)

From Chile to Patagonia

Matias, Cris, Benja & Alex coming back from the pool...

It's been a while since we last wrote!
What have we done in the last couple of days? We first spent a 4 days in Santiago (Chile) where we stayed at Alex's cousin Cristina's place. They're like brothers and sisters so it was super nice to catch up with her and meet with her little family: She has two lovely little boys (Matias, 4,  and Benjamin, 2) who adopted us right away! In Santiago we visited the downtown area and beautiful surroundings but we didn't stay for long because we wanted to see the Chilean pacific coast, so we headed to Valparaiso and its beautiful coloured houses and Vina del Mar where we ate amazing seafood and drank delicious wines and most importantly had a lot of fun!

Valparaiso
Then from STG we flew to the entrance door for Patagonia: Puerto Montt. We actually stayed in a little town just 20kms from there called Puerto Varas. It's a shame because we went there to see the Osorno volcano but the weather was so bad that all we saw was the hotel... but we were very lucky because the hotel was amazing,  there was a great spa and fitness so we decided to get pampered which is in our point of view a pretty good plan as well!
After this we crossed the Andes by bus as we were heading to Bariloche (Argentina). It was a lot of fun because we were in a bus with 30 Brazilians so no need to tell you how noisy the bus was...but you should have seen how crazy they all went when it started to snow!!! They had never seen it so it was magical for them. You could hear some "Nossa" and some "Meu Deus" during half an hour...and they were pretty mad at us because we didn't show any appreciation for this magic moment...but I mean...we are Swiss...we don't show our emotions and we have snow half of the year!!!

Later that day we arrived at Patricia & Andrew's beautiful house just outside of Bariloche in a little condominium called Arelauquen. They are practically family as Patricia grew up with Claire's dad in Buenos Aires. And let me tell you that we were able (again) to have a glimpse of what Paradise could look like. This place was amazing. The view first of all, on lake Gutierrez, was breathtaking. Then the golf...18 holes at 100m from home...Alex couldn't be happier...he played twice with Andrew...leaving the wives do their own program which Patricia calls "Golf widows program" which involved swimming, tanning, exercising in the gym and... alot of talking of course!...we also had the best meat ever at El Boliche de Alberto...amazing!!! We went on a nature trip too to see a volcano and its glacier. It's called "Tronador" because its seracs make a lot of noise when they fall...pretty scary by the way! Andrew and Patricia took care of us as if we were their kids...and we really felt like family with them so if you read this: thanks again!

Now we are currently in the center of Patagonia in a small town called El Calafate. It's the centerpoint for all day trips to the glaciers (Perito Moreno is the best known) or National Park ofTorres del Paine and we've done both, enjoying the breathtaking views on the lakes, glaciers and mountains. Pretty cool days in the wind! and long! the sun doesn't go down until 11 pm so we need to close the shutters to go to bed! We also went horseback riding around lago Argentino...like real Gauchos...except that Alex fell off his horse as he was galopping...so you can imagine the bruises...it's like jumping from a car at 30km/h...but he bravely jumped back on the horse right away... and he still thinks it was one of the best moment of our trip until now!

Better than the Colombian donkeys...

It's strange to be far from home for Christmas, and we sometimes have what Alex calls "mamitis" and "papitis", two very well-known illnesses caracterized by homesick feelings ;-) hehehe but at the same time we are really enjoying every minute of this trip we are doing thanks to you all! It's even better than what we could have ever imagined.
Sending you lots of love!

Bye bye Colombia!!!

During the 3 days we spent with Alex's uncle Luis and his family in Cali, between the family asados (BBQs) and the sightseeing, we visited the zoo with all its tropical animals (the highlight was the "mariposero" which is a place where thousands of butterflies and other big insects fly over your head and you gotta pretend you're cool with that) and Luis also showed us a piece of land that they recently bought in order to build a finca (local chalet with banana trees instead of pines) soon. The view is amazing from up there but you better take the Jeep because the road is slippery and damn steep.

After the Cali pit stop, we arrived in Armenia, where Alex's aunt Sarita lives. She took very good care of us, spending all her days with her sobrino y la esposa, showing us around this small and calm city (as big as Lausanne). We also met with Luz Elena (one of Alex's cousins) and her family who invited us to their finca with a beautiful swimming pool. On the last day, we went to the Parque del cafe, where we saw coffee plantations from a telepherique! There was even a chairlift :-) Every night we did of "Rumi Q" championship with a little "trago", with Sarita and Alex's grand aunt Beatriz, alot of fun and very relaxing!

We then flew to beautiful Cartagena. The town is just amazing. Every stone has a memory and the view of the city from the Popa monastery is breathtaking.  On the night we arrived we did a very cheesy city tour on a horse carriage...but hey we are on honeymoon so it's allowed!!! On the second day we took a boat to an archipelago called Islas del Rosario, 50 km off the coast of Cartagena, where we experienced what real luxury means: a whole island (pretty small actually) just for us. There is only one boutique hotel and as it is still low season it was almost empty which means we were on our own in paradise!!! Besides it's the only sunny place in the whole country right now because it's flooded everywhere else...so let me tell you that we enjoyed it to the fullest. The people from the hotel treated us like VIPs, we had an exclusive candle light dinner on the beach (honeymoon I'm telling you!) and they also granted us with a very nice tour of the islands around, particularly one called Santa Cruz del Islote which is known as the most populated island on Earth...or on water! Most of the inhabitants are actually children - it was a unique experience.

Then we came back to Cartagena and just enjoyed the very good food and the encounters with the local fauna (Toucans visited us for breakfast and Alex's "cousin" the sloth or "paresseux" in french which is kind of a lazy monkey), and wandered around the historical centre (and its boutiques!) Alex also bought an amazing Panama hat after tough negotiations ;-)

 The storm is coming...

After this, we drove up north to a national park called "Parque Tayrona". It lies at the Caribbean coast and is actually a big jungle full of scary animals. We stayed in the Ecohabs, and had the most amazing food...especially fish and seafood, prepared in the Caribbean way... Wish we could make you taste a bit of the pescado envuelto en hoja de platano with its burned coconut rice and avocado salad through this blog! hmmmmmm!! We decided to visit the park by horse and although Claire was frustrated at first because she got a donkey and Alex a horse, the donkey ended up taking the lead of the tour which made her happy as you can imagine hehehe. She (Claire not the donkey...) actually also took the lead on the mosquito bites contest... she even got bitten on her eye and looked like she had fought against Mohamed Ali on that night!!! But thank God the swelling is down now.
Now we just arrived in Buenos Aires and it actually feels like home so we're very happy. Colombia was awesome and we'll definitely come back very soon.

From Lima to Cali

Last week we were 3 days in Lima where we visited the Museum of the Spanish Inquisition (scary) as well as the beautiful seaside (Costa Verde), and its romantic parcs (you can see a picture of the love statue in the love parc). But the biggest highlight of Lima and Peru are the restaurants  -  in our opinion the best cuisine in the world! ...it's really gastronomic, so special! alot of asian influence (they call it fusion), fish, meet, seafood...! Rosa Nautica, Osaka, Rafael -> 3 restaurants you should definetely visit at least once in your life...hmmmm!!
We then spent a week in rainy Bogota - the city is super nice although a bit cold...actually the whole country is flooded...and we are crossing fingers to have some sun in Cartagena (Caribean coast) in 10 days! We first spent 4 days at one of Alex's aunt's place (super welcoming!), it was really nice because the children are our age -  Santiago and Maria Emilia  - and they took us out to this amazing restaurant called “Andres carne de res” – amazing food and great RUMBA! So much fun dancing! They also invited us to their "country club" where you can do pretty much anything from manicure to bowling, golf, horseriding, tennis, pool... you name it! Amazing and very different from anything you can find in Switzerland.
In Bogota we also spent 3 days at some of Alex's parents' friends, Cecilia y Gonzalo, who have been happily married for 35 years (definitely inspiring!) and welcomed us in their lovely penthouse. They took us the Catedral de Sal in Zipaquira (a cathedral built inside a salt mine – where we watched a 3D movie about how it was made!) and on the next day we visited el Museo del Oro (museum of gold and native artifacts, very modern and impressive) and the Museo Botero (the paintings and sculptures were awesome!).
Yesterday we flew to Cali (tierra caliente) where we are staying at Alex's uncle’s place – we had a very nice dinner, catching up and all. The weather is nice and hot in here...just the way we like it!
